La Cumbre Floor Covering & Design refinishes, repairs and installs hardwood floors in Santa Barbara. Two Google reviewers say they live in the city, and a Santa Barbara real estate broker writes that he refers Tony to his clients. Santa Barbara is La Cumbre’s main hub: about 85 percent of its jobs are here, a short drive from its base in Carpinteria. Estimates are free: call (805) 698-9745.
What Santa Barbara floors tend to be
- Craftsman bungalows (1900 to 1940). Bungalow Haven, the proposed historic district, is more than half Craftsman. One published story tells of a 1919 Santa Barbara bungalow whose owners rolled up the carpet and found original oak.
- Spanish Colonial Revival (after 1925). The June 29, 1925 earthquake led, within eleven days, to the country’s first Architectural Board of Review, and the style that followed defines the city’s core. The city’s own guidelines list clay tile and decorative tile baseboards as character-defining features, which is why wood floors in these houses often meet tile at a doorway.
- Queen Anne and Victorian (1900 to 1910) around downtown and the Upper East, often with softer fir floors.
- Postwar Mesa houses (1950s), where a slab under the floor changes what can be installed.
Mixed species, additions and decades of repairs are the normal condition here. The service area guide has the sources.
A Santa Barbara job, in Tony’s words
“We took a project in a historic Santa Barbara home where the floor was a mix of 80-year-old red oak and new white oak. The client wanted a seamless, unified color without tearing out the original wood. The challenge was neutralizing the pink undertones in the red oak so it matched the white oak. I custom-bleached the wood, applied a specialized stain match, and sealed it with a 2-component matte finish. The result was a completely invisible transition that saved the historic floor.”Tony
More on how that works is on the color matching page.

Working in the city
- Hours. The City of Santa Barbara allows construction from 7 am to 8 pm daily under Municipal Code 9.16.040. After-hours work needs the Chief Building Official’s approval a week ahead.
- Permits. Refinishing an existing floor does not usually need one. Structural subfloor work can. The city has its own permit counter.
- Water. The city’s 2025 water report puts surface-water hardness at about 420 ppm, which shows as mineral spotting on tile and glass; wood floors are cleaned with a damp, not wet, mop either way. See the care guide.
- Air. Marine layer mornings and dry sundowner afternoons move wood more than most places. See the air.
What we do here
- Sanding and refinishing of oak, fir and other existing floors
- Board repair for termite, water and wear damage, and color matching between old and new
- New hardwood, herringbone and parquet and stairs
